Updates to the online supplements to 'Building' and 'Affirming'

The online supplements to Building: Letters 1960–75, and Affirming: Letters 1975–97, have been updated with new material, marking the 112th anniversary of Berlin's birth (in Riga, 6 June 1909).

As well as by using the links above, the supplements can be found on this website, by clicking the 'Catalogue' button, and then using the search engine there.

Both supplements include additional letters in the series from IB to Robert Silvers (pictured below), the long-time editor of The New York Review of Books; these new letters were first published in ‘The Israel Letters’, Jewish Quarterly no. 244, May 2021, 67–87.

Also included in the supplement to Affirming is a letter to the Japanese historian, Nobutoshi Hagihara, 23 May 1977, in which IB reflects on his visit to Japan that April, with his wife Aline.

Many thanks, as ever, to Henry Hardy, for making the supplements possible.
